In my opinion, creating a city’s logo always been one of the most challenging types of branding work. That’s why I decided to work on Vancouver visual identity, a city that I’d like to travel to someday. From there my challenge was to find a way to capture the essence of Vancouver and its inhabitants.

The city was founded only 132 years ago, it’s one of the greenest and most livable cities on earth. But it’s also a city with a conflicted image, most of the population is made of migrants divided in smaller communities. So how to create a unifying brand identity that falls in line with nowadays values and open a new conversation between Vancouver people.

I decided to create new symbols, a new language, a common ground that will unify today’s citizens.

Using Vancouver's nickname "VAN", I developed 3 symbols, each about a characteristic of the Vancouverite lifestyle :

Those 3 symbols paired with the city name form the institutional logo.

In terms of colours, I decided to use a shade of blue inspired by Vancouver sky and shores. The font is the Founders Grotesk which is made of different typographic influences mixed into one gentle contemporary amalgamation. I think those values are quite representative of what Vancouver is.

I created several print designs. First, event posters, we use the "play & interact" symbol and integrate it directly into the design. The symbol would change according to the type of event.

Then, I designed the city map, I kept the colours and worked on trademark illustrations to show how illustations would be incorporated in this branding.

The logo could also be used in a more unconventional way for merchandising materials for instance. 

The official website redesigned according to the new visual identity would include all the informations about the city, Status update, date, forecast, and show beautiful pictures of the city but also everything you need to know to stay there.
